How this estimate is calculated

The figure above is a model, not a survey result, and it is worth knowing exactly what it does before you rely on it in a negotiation. It takes a base salary for your discipline and experience level, multiplies it by a cost-of-market factor for your location, then adds flat amounts for a certification and for a postgraduate degree. The result is rounded to the nearest thousand.

What each input changes

Discipline and experience level — the base
Together these select one of 32 base figures across 8 disciplines and 4 bands. Everything else adjusts this number, so it is the one that matters most.
Location — a multiplier, not an addition
Ranges from 1.00× to 1.55× against the national average. Because it multiplies, it moves a senior salary by far more in absolute terms than a junior one — which is why relocation maths looks different at different stages of a career. Remote is treated as 1.25×, on the reasoning that remote roles are commonly benchmarked above the national average but below the top metros.
Certification and degree — flat additions
A certification adds a fixed amount, up to $25,000. A master's adds $12,000 and a doctorate $22,000. These are added after the location multiplier, so a credential is worth the same in Houston as in San Francisco — a simplification, and a visible one.

The range and the percentile

The low and high figures are the estimate ±15%. They are not a measured spread of real offers — they are a fixed band, and they widen in absolute terms as the estimate grows. The percentile compares your estimate against the same discipline and experience level at the national average with no certification and a bachelor's degree, and is capped between the 3rd and 97th so the model never claims more precision at the extremes than it has.

Where the figures come from, and their limits

These baselines are our own editorial estimates. They are not drawn from a published wage dataset, and no individual figure should be treated as a measured market rate for a named employer. We publish the model rather than only its output so you can see what it assumes and judge it yourself.

Four things it deliberately does not model: equity and bonus, which at senior levels in software can exceed base salary; company size and industry, which move compensation as much as location does; the year, since these are static figures rather than a live index; and any interaction between inputs — a PE licence is worth more in civil engineering than in software, and this model does not know that.

Use it to compare scenarios against each other, which is what a consistent model is genuinely good for. Do not use it as evidence in a negotiation.
